just saw the new star trek.

FUCKING AWESOME

I was a little hesitant that they wouldn’t be able pull off the time travel alternate reality like they failed to on enterprise. thank god for jj abrams.

The cast was incredible as well. I have to say that I thought chris pine and anton yelchin were my favorites though. I mean not that zachary quinto did a bad job. and I really loved the love interest between spock and uhura. that was great!! it’s just I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for chekov. and the new kirk is just fucking hot!!

So back to the time travel thing. I thought they writers did a really good job in creating a new universe to be explored. I’m not sure how I feel about vulcan. I mean I’m really sad. They played such a huge role in the formation of the federation and now they won’t be there. There’s so much that history there that’s lost now. I’m really excited to see the next movie and see where they take the stories of this crew. I’m glad that the time travel was just a tool and not the main point of the story. All in all one of the best trek movies I’ve ever seen. There were a few lines that pandered to the hard core trekkies which I really enjoyed. The scene with the computer not recognizing Chekov’s voice, that was hilarious!!

great movie, great cast. great jj abrams. I’m definitely going to see it at least a dozen times in the theater. if you haven’t seen it yet. why not?? go see it now!

Well that’s it. ER is pretty much over. All that’s left to do is watch the show die. I’ve been watching for years and now all my favorite characters are gone. Abby was the last. Her monologue throughout tonight’s episode was really touching.

Job 3:20-26

“Why is light given to those in misery,
and life to the bitter of soul,
to those who long for death that does not come,
who search for it more than for hidden treasure,
who are filled with gladness
and rejoice when they reach the grave?
Why is life given to a man
whose way is hidden,
whom God has hedged in?
For sighing comes to me instead of food;
my groans pour out like water.
What I feared has come upon me;
what I dreaded has happened to me.
I have no peace, no quietness;
I have no rest, but only turmoil.”

Job 38:16-18

“Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea
or walked in the recesses of the deep?
Have the gates of death been shown to you?
Have you seen the gates of the shadow of death?
Have you comprehended the vast expanses of the earth?
Tell me, if you know all this. ”

These passages seem to be speaking to me. I’m not sure what they’re saying. I’ll think and dream on them tonight. Let me know if you have any thoughts.

Religulous poster monkey

After church tonight a group of us went to see Religulous. You know the new movie from Bill Maher. What a crazy trip that was. Afterwards we went to a local bar to talk about the film. It really was an intriguing film.

If you don’t want any spoilers stop reading and go away.

The film was about doubt. Watching this movie I couldn’t help but remember back to my training in apologetics* from years ago. Especially with that clip from Kurt Cameron talking about getting around people’s intellectual roadblocks. If there ever was a champion for apologetics, it had to be Kurt. Bill seemed to me to be using the tactics of apologetics against those who professed any kind of faith (Jew, Muslim, Christian, etc…)

One of the scenes that sticks out in my memory is when he’s talking to the truckers. One of the truckers has “had enough” get’s up and leaves. The rest of the truckers stay and converse and fellowship with him. They stay even knowing he’s making a documentary about how their faith in Christ is foolish. They end up praying for him acknowledging that they don’t have the answer’s Bill’s looking for. Bill thanks them for being “Christ like and not just Christian.” That scene really struck me. Christians so often are quick to get up and leave when they encounter something that challenges their faith. I know I certainly have been guilty of doing just that. Years ago God was challenging my faith and trying to mold it into something new and exciting, but I couldn’t “handle” it and got up and walked away from God Himself.

So many people have such a faith that when confronted with a little doubt it crumbles before them. Every time I think about doubt and faith, I think about the story of doubting Thomas. I kinda like the NASB translation of John 20:29 “Jesus said to him, ‘Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.’”

Jesus seems to be asking Thomas if his seeing the Risen Christ has made it any more real than it was a moment before. I wonder if there’s anything to that. Do we need to see Christ to believe in Him? Is doubt a good or a bad thing? I think it can be a good thing. I know from my personal experience. When God tried to use doubt to change my faith I turned away. I don’t doubt that he was using doubt for my benefit though (yes, I did actually just say that LOL).

Anyways so back to the movie. Whether you’re a Christian who needs a bit of doubt splashed in your faith, or not who just wants to watch a funny movie that makes you think, Religulous is a good movie.

*Apologetics – A rational defense for the existence of God. This branch of theology emerged in the modern period as a consequence of the changes approaches to proving God existed. Both reason and scientific evidence were used to provide evidences for this rational defense of faith or belief in God.

Seriously folks.

When I was a kid I never had that kind of talent let alone cuteness. OMG!! Watching these two I can hear my biological clock ticking ever more loudly can you? You have to watch these kids. I really like the show anyways. It’s always entertaining. It’s just fun to see what everyone can do.

David Militello – America’s Got Talent 2008

Kaitlyn Maher – America’s Got Talent 2008

Isn’t she just the cutest little girl. OMG!! I can’t wait to have kids.
